Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) describes a broad spectrum of abuses that disproportionately affect women and girls worldwide. Statistics show that one in three women and girls in the UK experience physical or sexual violence during their lifetime and nearly 40% of teenagers in relationships are a victim of relationship abuse.
It is estimated that four in five victims and survivors of VAWG seek help from the NHS at least once. VAWG is part of day-to-day life in the health and social care sector and preventing it should be considered in your bids and your day-to-day operations. Violence Against Women and Girls – What is Being Done
‘Freedom from Violence and Abuse: Volume 2 Action Plan’ outlines concrete commitments and specific initiatives for the 2026–2029 Spending Review period aimed at halving violence against women and girls within a decade. The action plan is organised into three core pillars:

- Prevention and Early Prevention
2. Relentless Pursuit of Perpetrators
3. Support for Victims and Survivors
Support for Victims and Survivors
Jess Asato MP has been appointed to steer a major overhaul of the NHS response. Over her initial tenure, she is focusing on three key priorities:
- Reducing the negative impact and links of alcohol on VAWG.
- Embedding specialised VAWG support directly into new neighbourhood health centres, bringing together GPs, nurses, pharmacists and other services under one roof.
- Improving how local VAWG services are funded and commissioned so help is distributed equitably.
New Referral Services
A new national NHS initiative will ensure there are dedicated referral services for women and girls affected by violence and abuse in every area of England by 2029. This will connect patients to specialist domestic abuse and sexual violence services within their local area through their GP. Under a separate measure being brought in, child sexual abuse survivors will also have access to specialist, trauma-informed care in one place as the multi-agency Child House model expands to all NHS regions in England, backed by up to £50 million.
Violence Against Women and Girls in Tendering
Mention of VAWG is becoming increasingly common across tender questions, both as part of Safeguarding questions and separately. It is important that your approach to handling, monitoring and raising awareness to VAWG and Domestic Violence is clear across your company policies, procedures and training. Present initiatives to reduce VAWG emphasise greatly the importance in working collaboratively with local/national resources to raise awareness, prevent and provide support for victims and survivors.
